The eight-decked steamship “Titanic” was constructed over a span of three years at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. The ship’s launch into the water took place on May 31, 1911. At the time of its launch and entry into service, the Titanic was the largest ship in the world. We’ve collected a series of lesser-known photos from the Titanic for you to appreciate the scale of this vessel.

In the next 50 years, nothing will remain of the Titanic. Today, its hull is covered with bacteria and other organisms that annually consume up to 180 kilograms of material. Yearly dives to depths of over 3,500 meters allow for monitoring this process.
